Faithful original text is the most important principle of translation, but different translators will have different understandings and practices in this principle.
Our understanding of the faithful original text includes two points:
First, we must accurately convey the meaning of the original text;
Second, we must faithfully express the style of the original text.
The two complement each other and are indispensable.
First, accurately convey the meaning of the original text
Let us first come to the first point of how to be faithful to the original: accurately convey the meaning of the original. This is reflected in the translation process, without adding, not deleting, and not changing the meaning of the original text. How to do this?
The original text is just a simple statement of fact that seven people with minor injuries have been discharged. From the original text, we are unable to judge the rehabilitation of the seven discharged patients. Therefore, the use of "rehabilitation" in the translation to describe the situation of the discharger does not conform to the actual meaning of the original text. It adds information not provided in the original text to the translation.
What we need to emphasize here is that although we actually add some words when necessary in order to faithfully and fluently express the meaning of the original text, this addition is only to clearly express the meaning implied in the original text. It is not to put the meaning that is not in the original text into the translation.
Therefore, when we use the word-adding method to translate, we must be very careful and careful, and we must clearly distinguish the added words from the added meaning in the consciousness.
If the reason is that things are not human, then this connection does not include the meaning of condemnation. And "sniper" is a verb with a strong condemnation, it is aimed at people. We can't attack the weather because of crop failures, but we can attack terrorists because of the suffering of innocent people.
According to the original text, the author is to introduce the speculative speculation about the cause of the stampede. This is just to discuss the impact of certain phenomena on the stampede. It is not for the specific person responsible for the stampede, so the word "sniper" exaggerates the author. And the eyewitness's emotions, and fail to realize that there is a subtle relationship between the words, some words can not be used with other words.
